Abstract

Stress concentration around circular holes is an important consideration in the mechanical design of functionally graded material (FGM) plates. This study investigates the effects of material gradation and hole interaction on stress concentration using the extended finite element method (XFEM) combined with a level-set approach. Isotropic and FGM plates containing single and interacting circular holes under uniaxial tensile loading were analyzed. The numerical model was validated against the classical analytical solution for an isotropic plate. The results demonstrated good agreement between numerical and analytical predictions. Material gradation significantly influenced stress concentration, while decreasing hole spacing increased stress concentration due to interactions between adjacent stress fields. These findings provide useful insights into the mechanical design and structural performance of perforated FGM plates.
