Air Quality, Physical Activity, and Sustainable Urban Health: Implications for Physical Education, Sports Participation, and Social Equity

Abstract


This study examines how air quality affects physical activity, physical education, sports participation, public health, and social equity within sustainable urban development. A structured narrative review of literature published between 2020 and 2026 synthesized evidence on particulate matter, transport emissions, industrial pollution, vulnerable populations, and urban policy interventions. The findings show that poor air quality increases respiratory and cardiovascular risks and may reduce exercise tolerance and discourage outdoor activity, particularly among children, older adults, athletes, and low-income communities. The study provides an interdisciplinary framework linking air-quality management with physical education, sports science, urban health, and sustainable social development.
